Plessen Healthcare offers COVID-19 antibody testing by appointment at the Orange Grove Medical campus.
ST CROIX, USVI, June 1, 2020 -Plessen Healthcare is now offering COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) antibody testing at their Orange Grove medical campus.
What is an Antibody Test?
Antibody or serology screening test is designed to detect immune proteins IgM and IgG that are produced by the immune system to fight the infection. The presence of these antibodies may indicate exposure to COVID-19 at some time in the past.
The IgM antibody shows up between 6 to 14 days after exposure to the virus. The IgG antibody is detected later and may indicate long-term immunity. The timing of antibody test affects accuracy. If testing is done too early in the course of infection when the immune response is still building up, the test may not detect antibodies. We recommend that you wait at least seven (7) days after onset of symptoms before getting tested.
The World Health Organization (WHO) cautions that there is a lack of evidence on whether having antibodies means you are protected against reinfection with COVID-19. The level of immunity and how long immunity lasts are not yet known.
Should I be Tested?
If you believe you have been exposed to COVID-19 or have had symptoms in the past, you may be a good candidate for this test.
All scheduling for COVID-19 testing will be done online via our website plessenhealthcare.com. Patients will complete and submit the following forms and information during the online appointment request process:
- COVID-19 Symptom Questionnaire
- Plessen Healthcare COVID-19 Testing Consent Form
- Copy of a Government Issued ID
- Copy of Insurance Card
- Credit Card Information
If you are unable to fill out the forms online, you may present to our clinic to fill these out. Please be aware that you may be scheduled for testing on a different day.
Plessen Healthcare will provide the doctor’s order as required to be tested. Plessen will also provide you with a receipt which you may present to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.
Corporate testing services are available.
How is Testing done?
After your appointment is confirmed, you will need to arrive on time. Patients will be directed to proceed to our outdoor testing area. Please wear a mask at all times when you are in the testing area.
A healthcare worker will confirm your identity and then draw your blood. Once the blood is obtained please depart. You will be given your results as well as important information for your next steps by phone in approximately 24 hours.
Although this test has NOT been reviewed by the FDA, the test underwent Validation of Proficiency Testing according to the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations.
Results from antibody testing should not be used as the sole basis to diagnose or exclude COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) infection or to inform infection status. A Negative test result does not rule out possible COVID-19 infection.
